Policies

Ultimately, the hard work of finding and replacing lead service lines (LSLs) must be done locally by the drinking water utility and the community it serves. However, there are limits to what a utility can do without the cooperation and support of property owners, consumers, and the private sector in its service area.

​There are also limits to what a community and utilities can do without sufficient support from federal and state government.

​​​​The LSLR Collaborative identified the following opportunities to consider to support local utility and community efforts to find and replace LSLs:
  • Ensuring communities have access to needed funding
  • Helping consumers make informed decisions
  • Requiring LSL replacement when opportunities arise         
  • Engaging other lead poisoning prevention programs
  • Improving how we communicate the risk​​
The Collaborative is not an advocacy organization, and these are a compilation of ideas for further consideration, not recommendations for policy changes. It is up to others, including the Collaborative’s members, to further assess these opportunities and determine whether or how they should be put into practice.
