Newark Mayor Ras Baraka made two big promises in his seventh state of the city address: to soon finish replacing lead service lines in the city and to create an equitable master plan for future development.
The upcoming May 2022 elections did not come up in the mayor’s address, but the plans laid out in his speech are a pact between the leader of New Jersey’s largest city and the voters there. The mayor has already endorsed candidates for city council in the 2022 election and no challenger has announced their bid for Baraka’s seat.
