Association of State Drinking Water Administrators Webinar Summary
Lead service lines (LSLs) are a major source of the lead that gets into drinking water. This was a clear factor in the crisis in Flint. Removal of LSLs was also identified by the National Drinking Water Advisory Council as a significant issue that EPA should address in the revisions to the Lead and Copper Rule. We will never get to the goal of zero lead in drinking water without totally removing LSLs. So, what should state drinking water programs be considering? This webinar will point to some technical resources and provide some examples from other states, to get you started thinking about how you and your water systems can respond. The webinar will cover the tools available on the Lead Service Line Replacement Collaborative website that can assist water systems, local governments, citizen groups, and others interested in developing and implementing local lead service line replacement programs. These resources can also be used by the states that may support these local initiatives. State colleagues will share how they are using the DWSRF and other tools to help finance LSL replacement and “get the lead out.” Hopefully this will only be the beginning of the exchange of information and dialogue about how states can support the goal of full lead service line replacement.
